Tank dismantled using Hitachi Power

A Norwegian demolition company has been appointed to remove the upper structure of
the Ekofisk 2/4 T, which is commonly known as "the tank". It consists of almost 25,000
tonnes of steel and other materials which will be brought ashore by AF Decom AS to its
new receiving station for marine structures.

The tank is unique in its construction. It was built mostly on-site and then frequently
adapted to suit the changing requirements of its owners. The entire operation will see
98% of the materials being recycled.

AF Decom was the only contractor which proposed to use modified excavators fitted
with hydraulic universal processors and shears. The process will involve cutting down the
structure, loading the scrap onto containers and shipping the material away from the site.

The company's goal is to optimise the machines' applications to best effect, so that
the efficiency and safety targets surrounding the project are met. In addition, AF Decom
has acquired a supply ship which is allowing them to make full use of the logistical
resources at their disposal.

The project commenced in the summer of 2005 and all materials will be brought
ashore before the end of 2007. The land disposal won't be completed until 2008.
Hitachi's Norwegian dealer, Nanset Standard AS, has specially equipped six Hitachi
Zaxis excavators with an assortment of tools for this assignment. The transportation of
the excavators also involved the detailed and documented process of dismantling, lifting
and assembling of the machines to the site.
