Hitachi Construction Machinery (Europe) NV (HCME) has introduced new four- and five-tonne models into its popular mini excavator range. The ZX48U-3 and ZX52U-3 short-tail mini excavators deliver enhanced performance, increased productivity and reduced running costs compared with the previous models. They also utilise next generation engines and hydraulic technology to enable improved handling, smooth operation and stability.

Better performance

The Hitachi ZX48U-3 and ZX52U-3 short-tail mini excavators are equipped with powerful – yet relatively low noise – four-cylinder engines, which comply with Emission Regulations EU Stage III A. The machines use Eco Zone technology, which helps to cut fuel consumption while still maintaining a high level of productivity. For example, through use of Eco Zone, the ZX48U-3 benefits from a 13% reduction in fuel consumption compared with its predecessors.

The new Zaxis mini excavators also utilise leading-edge hydraulic technology. The hydraulic pilot control levers deliver smooth handling and easy operation. The Hitachi High Performance Hydraulic System (HHH) ensures optimum oil flow to motor and oil cylinders for smooth simultaneous operation. The three-pump hydraulic system and arm regenerative circuit also help to improve handling while digging and levelling.

Handling is further improved through the revolutionary automatic travel speed device. This helps the operator to control the machine when carrying heavy loads or attachments through automatically restricting speed. Stability is also increased through use of an additional counterweight, which comes as standard on both models.

Ultimate comfort and safety

The ZX48U-3 and ZX52U-3 have been designed with operator comfort and safety in mind. The machines have a large cab space with a bright interior, which helps to provide a pleasant working environment. The large seat has a fully adjustable back rest and is equipped with suspension to enable comfortable operation. The cab also has a rubber-mounted floor, which helps to absorb vibrations.

The fingertip control, short-stroke levers have been redesigned to help reduce operator fatigue. The seat back rest box, drinks holder and air conditioning provide added convenience during long working hours.

The ZX48U-3 and ZX52U-3 also have a number of important safety features including a pilot-control shut-off lever, neutral engine start system and an optional theft deterrent system, which help to prevent illegal operation and vandalism.

Reduced running costs

The ZX48U-3 and ZX52U-3 benefit from reduced running costs through use of durable components. The machines’ front attachments have been reinforced for improved reliability and the boom tops are strengthened with high-tensile steel to reduce wear and jerking. The D-shaped frame provides additional support and helps to prevent damage caused by obstacles.

The Zaxis mini excavators have a reinforced undercarriage and the box-section stays are utilised at the blade for enhanced durability. The new Hitachi rubber crawlers feature a steel-cored structure that protects shoe edges from being damaged.

Operator downtime is also reduced thanks to easy maintenance. The engine cover slides up and down for quick servicing and the X-beam track promotes easy mud removal, shortens machine washing time and reduces disposal costs.

The ZX48U-3 and ZX52U-3 also have an Auto-Idle function, which restricts engine speed to reduce fuel consumption, emissions and noise. This feature is advantageous when working in residential areas or on job sites that require particular environmental consideration.
